Week One: My first week in England

My last week or so in Indiana before coming to England went by faster than I could have ever imagined possible. I loved the whole time, seeing my family, visiting with my friends, playing Bocci Ball, having the best fireworks display *yet* on the 4th of July, painting American flags on our toenails... the whole package. It was gorgeous.

And now I've been here for a full week. It started off just about as bad as you can get, because I was detained by Immigration officials at Heathrow Airport for 5 hours as they threatened to send me right back to America. Ths story is a long and painful one, but here's the short and sweet version. i get to the airport, tell Immigration my story, they don't believe it. Even though it's the truth. They don't tell me WHY they don't believe it though. Until the whole ordeal is OVER with, I have no idea why I'm being detained. Anyway... they search all my luggage. They read my diary. They read my address and datebook. They open my make-up containers. They read every entry in my checkbook. They count my money. They leave nothing unturned. And in the end they take away from me my diary, datebook, checkbook, passport, bank statements, and addressbook. He send me to the Immigration Holding Area (a cell) and I wait while he makes photocopies of all these things and interviews David. David gets interviewed 2 or 3 times, I still haven't seen him yet. They interview me more, things are horrible, I cry - then finally 5 hours later they let me go. They just didn't think I had enough money, and that was that. They didn't believe that David was going to support me while I am over here, and were worried that I was going to take a job wihle in the UK.

Sigh.

Anyway, now we're hiring an Immigration lawyer. Fun fun fun. But I am here, and I am happy, and David & I are doing fantastically wel together. I'm enjoying being domestic, and enjoying learning about the English way of life. Not the touristy kind, but the real kind. There are more low-carb foods here than I could have imagined, so I'm pleased to death with the food - something I'm very surprised to hear myself say. The weather has been gorgeous as well, so far. Yeah it's rained, but its a pretty light rain and it hasn't been all day. I've gone by the river a lot, into the Cathedral, into Cambridge... just all sorts of things. We went fishing last night at this wild part of the river just down the road from us, and horses walked up to us whilst we were fishing. I'm stunned with the beauty of this place.

And very happy here so far. :) We'll see how I feel in a few months, but for right now I couldn't be more pleased. So that's my report so far, over and out.
